Environmental Science: Scientific Method

This topic is a foundation for all the topics that come under the branches of science. There is a lot of information out there but we need to use our scientific senses to make sense out of it. The students are taught how to interpret the information presented to you for understanding the concepts. There are various elaborated steps to be followed under the scientific method, but we start with the basic steps to the beginners and then go to the variables. The basic steps are;

  • Observation (to observe or notice something that needs further attention/explanation/)
  • Hypothesis (to come up with an idea or an educated guess with a testable prediction)
  • Tests/Experiments (to set up an experiment with the measurable subjects/laboratory conditions)
  • Data Collection (to collect some concrete information that can relate to the hypothesis)
  • Results (to interpret the data for confirming the findings)
  • Theory (if the hypothesis has been accepted or rejected from the results, if accepted it can lead to become a theory and if rejected then the hypothesis needs to be modified either by staring all over again or by controlling the variables)

Further discussion will be added per students’ communication with the instructor through this website.
